404 Error Page Template

What it's for: Displaying error pages when visitors try to access content that doesn't exist on your site - broken links, mistyped URLs, or deleted pages

When it's used: When someone visits a URL that doesn't exist on your site, clicks broken links, or lands on pages that have been moved or deleted

What you can design: Custom error page layouts - helpful error messages, search functionality, navigation suggestions, popular content recommendations, or contact information to help lost visitors

Appears when: Any non-existent page URL is visited on your site

Examples of when this template appears:

  • Someone clicks an old link to a deleted blog post and gets a "page not found" error.
  • That's your 404 Error Page template.
  • Or when someone mistypes your URL like /contac instead of /contact - they see your 404 Error Page template.

What dynamic data is available:

You have access to site-wide data and error context (no specific page content since the page doesn't exist)

  • requested URL that caused the error
  • site navigation and menus
  • recent posts or popular content
  • search functionality
  • contact information
  • site-wide metadata
Pro feature

You can create smart 404 pages with content suggestions based on the requested URL, recent posts, or popular pages to help visitors find what they're looking for. Learn more about using dynamic data →

What you control:

Everything on error pages - error messaging, helpful navigation, search forms, content suggestions, contact information. You design a helpful experience for visitors who encounter broken links or mistyped URLs.

Doesn't affect:

  • Existing pages - this only appears when content doesn't exist
  • All other templates - 404 is completely separate from your normal content templates

Template Priority: 10

This template has default priority 10 in Builderius template hierarchy. This is high priority, ensuring your custom 404 design takes precedence over theme defaults and provides a consistent error experience.

Note: When you design a page or post directly (without using templates), that design always wins regardless of priority numbers. Learn more about designing pages directly →
