All Archives
What it's for: A fallback template for all archive pages - category listings, tag pages, author archives, date archives, and custom taxonomy pages when no more specific template exists.
When it's used: When someone visits any archive page (categories, tags, authors, dates, custom taxonomies) and you haven't created a more specific template for that archive type.
What you can design: A universal archive layout that works across different listing types - flexible headers, post grids, filtering options, and pagination that adapts to various types of archive content.
Appears when: Any archive page is visited, but only when no more specific archive template is available.
Examples of when this template appears:
- Someone clicks on a category link, but you haven't created a specific Category Archive template.
- Your All Archives template displays the category posts.
- Or someone views an author's posts page, but you haven't created an Author Archive template - they see your All Archives template.
What dynamic data is available:
You have access to the current archive's data and all posts within it
- archive title (category name, author name, tag name, etc.)
- archive description
- posts within the archive
- pagination information
- post count
- archive metadata
You can also query related archives, filter posts by custom criteria, and create advanced archive layouts with conditional content based on archive type. Learn more about using dynamic data →
What you control:
Everything on archive listing pages when more specific templates don't exist - headers, post listings, filtering controls, pagination, sidebar content. You design a flexible experience that works across categories, tags, authors, and custom taxonomies.
Doesn't affect:
- Archives with specific templates - Category, Tag, Author, or Custom Taxonomy archive templates will override this
- Individual content pages - those need Single Post, Single Page, or Single CPT templates
- Homepage or blog index - those need Front Page or Blog Index templates
Template Priority: 70
This template has default priority 70 in Builderius template hierarchy. It serves as a fallback for archive pages, being overridden by more specific archive templates but taking precedence over general templates like Entire Website (100).
Note: When you design a page or post directly (without using templates), that design always wins regardless of priority numbers. Learn more about designing pages directly →
