Category Archive

What it's for: Displaying posts from a single specific category - showing all content tagged with one particular category term

When it's used: When someone clicks on a category link, visits a specific category URL (like /category/web-design/), or lands on an individual category's archive page

What you can design: Single category archive layouts - category headers with that category's description, post listings from that specific category, and navigation elements tailored to browsing one category's content

Appears when: Any individual WordPress category archive page is visited

Examples of when this template appears:

  • Someone clicks on the "Web Design" category link and sees all posts tagged with that specific category.
  • That's your Category Archive template.
  • Or when someone visits /category/tutorials/ and views all posts in the "Tutorials" category - they see your Category Archive template.

What dynamic data is available:

You have access to the specific category's data and all posts within it

  • category name
  • category description
  • category image/featured media
  • posts within this category
  • pagination information
  • post count in this category
  • parent/child category relationships
Pro feature

You can also query related categories, filter posts by additional criteria within the category, and create conditional layouts based on the specific category being viewed. Learn more about using dynamic data →

What you control:

Everything on individual category archive pages - category headers, post grid layouts, filtering controls, pagination styles, sidebar content. You design the complete experience for people browsing posts from one specific category.

Doesn't affect:

  • Individual posts or pages - those use Single Post, Single Page, or Single CPT templates
  • Other archive types - tag pages, author pages, or custom taxonomy archives need their own templates
  • Homepage or blog index - those need Front Page or Blog Index templates

Template Priority: 70

This template has default priority 70 in Builderius template hierarchy. It will override general templates like All Archives (70) when specifically targeting category archives, but gives way to more specific category conditions you might create.

Note: When you design a page or post directly (without using templates), that design always wins regardless of priority numbers. Learn more about designing pages directly →
